Tournament time!

After a very long time of not playing tournaments, I'm back! There is a tournament this Saturday and I'm very excited to be playing. We'll see if the tactical study overload can pay off in rating points. I should probably squeeze in some real games before I throw myself back in the fire. The time control is G/75 and the tournament is 3 rounds.

In other news, I have a glaring CT-Art mistake to share. In a handful of cases moves that are easily winning are 'wrong' because a somewhat better move exists (e.g. the difference between +2 and +3.5), but in this case, the program completely misses a mate in 2!
White to move
This is the starting position of problem 1082. The first move of the solution is Rd8+ and one variation given by Ct-Art is Kxd8 Qd2+ Bd4 Bxd4 Rc2 Bf6+ Ke8 leading to the position shown below.
White to move

And now the program gives Qxc2. Overlooking Rb8+ Rc8 Rxc8#. C'est la vie.

Current CT-Art stats:
Level 70: 72% (43 done, 16 to go)
CT-Art elo: 2452
Total done: 1082. Remaining: 127.

Why go all the way to Asheboro when you can play in the TACO every month?

Normally I agree with this completely, but I was out of town on May 19th and can't play June 23rd for other reasons. I'm itching to play and Asheboro's less than twice as far ;-). I'm also considering making the trip to Philly for the World Open, we'll see how I feel after my first live competition in a while.

Hey. I hope to see you at the World Open. i'm playing in the U18 5 day section under the Alias of George Duval.

I wonder how many other Knights/ Chess Bloggers will be there. I may have to make a Blunderprone Shirt for the occasion. i want to revamp my chess bully attire as well.

Good luck. I'm tempted to go, but I'm pretty stuck with TACO as no hotel fees etc..

glad to see you still hard at CT-Art.

since i am daily 'back at it' there, it is enboldening to see or hear of your figures and as always both impressive and one level above me in most areas... but man, does it help 'real chess' and does it make CTS seem a LOT easier!

also like you, or similar, while i am not sure if i will do it a third time, i definitely plan to repeat it again, albiet with no pressure to do it fast or on a schedule, more like a high grade workout rather than an obligatory regime.

warm regards, david

ah. youve been in my thoughts daily, since prufrock at CTS boldy said that he was running 2300 for CT-Art 3.0 but evidently has done this before, but he doesn’t say that!

no. this is my first pass. i did a tiny bit in trying a first pass, when my notebook fritzed out, but not too far, and this is my first circle. Moving my application data was too much of a chore.

i take this very seriously. CTA and CTS.

since youve been mostly 1620-50 that i can recall at CTS and indicate being around 2452, i have been mostly around 1500 and am at 2142: 72% overall, level one: 95%, two: 82%, three: 65%, four 68%, five 77%, six 79%, seven 65%, eight 73%, nine: 57%.

while my current stand at the very end of four (i called it start of five at CTS in one of my many recent comments for ease of understanding) is a pretty accurate portrait of where i am at, we will know even better going into five, since i am hard on 1001 by Reinfeld, active at CTS daily, and have a lot more ground under my belt since starting this circle in july! Since this is a most extended in time circle, we have like three chess players doing the work, with the current one well beyond the first user!

i got pretty exhausted a while back, but now have a LOT more capability. its funny how it builds. I am not tired for it now. Not at all. I am eager after work to sit and carve some deep variations, enjoy it, and while I find more than 3 or 4 hard AFTER work, I do greatly enjoy it. One or two are ok with me. But let me tell you, I do them!

im glad you wrote, very glad. it has been my solemnly sincere intention to weave your name into my comments, since you and i can help others see the correlation at CTS to CT-Art, but it is clear enought, 24 to 16, and 21.4 to 15.

warmest, dk
ps, one day if i continue to show my mettle, i know you will add my to your links! :)
